Friends of Kota Damansara (FOKD) a NGO fighting for the preservation of the Kota Damansara Forest Reserve organized the Earth Day event in conjunction with the International Earth Day on the 22nd April, 2008.

The event held at the Rozelle apartment hall just opposite the Forest Reserve attracted around 200 people from various residence associations and nature lovers. The event was co organized by the MBPJ, Petaling Jaya Local Council. The representative from MBPJ, Mr. Lee who is also the officer in charge of Local Agenda 21 explained diligently via his powerpoint how LA21 works and its benefits.

Dr. Nasir the socialist ADUN for Kota Damansara could only grin in surprise listening to the LA 21 officer, whom has never attempted to have a dialogue session with the residents and the FOKD when the forest was cut down for development. Later in his speech, Dr.Nasir slammed the authorities for ganging up with the capitalist and degazetting the forest reserve for development." At the end of the day, we realize that we do not have many friends. The state, local councils and developers gang up to enforce their plans to cut down forest for profits. "

Dr.Nasir also cautioned the FOKD that their demand to preserve the forest is a political demand. "There is no such thing as being apolitical". The people must be politicized and understand the rage of the capitalist system against the environment. Thus the solution is a political one " said Dr.Nasir.

Elizabeth Wong, social activist turned State Exco had some good news for the residents. She assured that the State Government has stopped all developments projects to review them. She also mentioned that the Kota Damansara Forest will be certainly re gazetted as a forest reserve or a State Park to forbid further encroachment in the future. Sivarasa, the MP for Subang also attended in support of preserving the forest and invited the public to work together with him, so that pro environmental laws could be introduced in the Parliament.
