Arul is a full time grass roots activist for over 30 years and he is an Economy graduate from UKM. He is currently the Central Committee member of PSM. Arul has been served as the Secretary General of PSM from 1998 till 2015. Among other things, Arul has worked in SUARAM, a leading human rights NGO in Malaysia from 1995 till 2006. Arul has served as local councillor at Semenyih constituency from 2008 till 2013. He is one of the founder of Jawatankuasa Kebajikan Mahasiswa/I UKM (1987); Plantation workers’ Support group (JSML) in 1993 to fight for plantation workers’housing issues and monthly wage; Community Development Centre (CDC), 1992: a grassroot group working with plantation workers , factory workers , urban pioneers and orang asli; on of the founder of Parti Sosialis Malaysia in 1998; Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas Malaysia (JERIT), and Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI). Arul has championed and led various issues including fuel hike, decent housing, minimum wage act, retrenchment fund for workers, abolishment of ISA and many more. He has been arrested for more than 40 times while defending the rights of the marginalized.
